Description: White crystals or crystalline Powder, slightly characteristic taste Very soluble in water, freely soluble in methanol, soluble in ethanol, practically insoluble in ether. Slightly hygroscopoc property. Solubility (H2O, g/100g): about 100 (25℃) Identification: (1) To 2ml of a solution of Cysteine Methyl Ester Monohydrochloride (1→200) add 1ml of pyridine and 1ml of ninhydrin T.S. (2%); a red color is produced. (2) To 5ml of a solution of Cysteine Methyl Ester Monohydrochloride (1→100) add dilute ferric chloride T.S.; a blue color is produced, and it gradually changes to green. (3) To 5ml of a solution of Cysteine Methyl Ester Monohydrochloride (1→100) add a few drops of cupric sulfate T.S.; a light yellow color is produced and a red-violet color is produced by adding more drops of cupric sulfate T.S. (4) To a solution of Cysteine Methyl Ester Monohydrochloride (1→100) add sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate and heat; the chlorine gas evolved changes potassium iodine starch paper moistened with water to blue.
