It is a complex of ruthenium and two triphenylphosphine ligands, which is a type of coordination complex. This compound is used in a variety of research applications, such as the synthesis of organic compounds and the study of biochemical and physiological effects.
Grubbs Catalyst 1st Generation belongs to a class of coordination complexes known as olefin metathesis catalysts. Olefin metathesis is a chemical reaction in which two alkene molecules are coupled through the exchange of carbon-carbon double bonds. Olefin metathesis occurs when a metal catalyst is present to mediate the reaction.
Robert H. Grubbs discovered the first olefin metathesis catalyst in the 1990s, and for his work, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005.
